The Students

Who Should Apply

The ideal student for this class is someone who is ready to invest energy and time writing their own healing narratives, and providing feedback on peers’ work, in a supportive workshop environment. Students should also be eager to learn about both the healing-through-writing genre as well as the theory behind the process of it. Students may start or continue a project, revise previous submissions, or workshop new writing. They will be expected to attend weekly class sessions; to submit a piece for workshop about once a month; to provide encouragement and written feedback to two students every week; and to be prepared to discuss weekly craft and sample readings.

This class is intended for students of all levels, but is specifically aimed at students who have completed Introduction to Writing to Heal or Writing to Heal I, and/or those with workshop experience who are ready to engage in this type of work with a continuous supportive group. Students in the midst of trauma should consider whether they feel ready to write about their experience and receive feedback on that work. Writing to Heal is a craft-based writing workshop; it provides students with the tools to use writing to process adversity, but it should not be used as a replacement for therapy. The program will set students up to continue in non-fiction Generator or Incubator programs.
