Are there any in-person class meetings or events for the Online Novel Incubator program?
No, there are no required in-person meetings or events for the online program. If a student wants to travel to Boston for specific writing events they are always welcome, but it’s not an embedded part of the program.
Does the same instructor teach in both the in-person and online programs?
No. Each class is distinct and is led by different instructors who devote their attention to that particular cohort.
What if I live in Boston but want to take the Online Novel Incubator instead of the in-person program?
Anyone can apply to either program; however, for the Online Novel Incubator, preference will be given to those who live outside of the greater Boston area because they would not have the option to take the in-person program otherwise.
Can I take the Online Novel Incubator at my own pace?
No, the program is not a self-paced course. Class meets regularly online, moving at a set pace together.
When does the Online Novel Incubator program start?
Classes officially begin in September (typically the middle/end of the month). However, the application deadline closes in mid-July, so prospective students should prepare application materials early.
Do I need a full novel manuscript to apply?
Yes, both our Novel Incubator programs – online and in-person – require a full novel manuscript to apply. It does not need to be polished or revised; we understand these are just drafts. But the full arc of the novel should be drafted, even if it’s rough. Manuscripts need to be a minimum of 100 pages and a maximum of 450 pages.
Does completing this program guarantee publication of my novel?
There are no publishing guarantees but GrubStreet’s track record of publications throughout all of its programs is significant. We were groundbreaking in the development of our Intensives programs, and the deeply focused artistic support of our programs continue to lead the industry today.
GrubStreet has also built a reputation of training publication-ready writers, so many agents and editors take special note of students who’ve come through our Intensives because they tend to be the most prepared writers with finely honed manuscripts.
