Are you just looking for your next great read? Join us for the first installment of our brand-new GrubStreet Book Club!
Instructor Kristen Paulson-Nguyen will lead participants in a craft-focused discussion of Neema Avashia’s funny, poignant, memoir-in-essays, Another Appalachia: Coming Up Queer and Indian in a Mountain Place.
Another Appalachia is an expansive, considered response to the narrowly defined Appalachia of J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy. We’ll focus on Another Appalachia’s “situation”—or raw material—and its “story”—the argument of the narrative. Attendees can expect to leave with an understanding of situation and story in personal narrative, inspiration to consider their work in these terms, and insight into how Avashia assembled her collection.
