Class Description

Novel Revision: Beyond the First Draft is a step-by-step course through the novel revision process. From character development to plot problems to backstory issues, we'll make sure your story is the best it can be to keep readers hooked until the very last page. You'll learn how to analyze your draft, spot problems or weak areas, and get the tools to fix them.

Each class will focus on one aspect of storytelling, such as: backstory, characters, suspense, description, beginnings, and dialogue. We'll have in-class exercises, opportunities to share your discoveries, and ask questions. This class is designed for those who have either finished or are nearing completion of a novel draft.

Course Objectives.

- Analyze your novel draft, spot problems or weak areas

- Gain insight into your story and characters

- Develop a plan to revise your novel efficiently with intention

- Approach your draft from the perspective of an editor, keeping the reader in mind

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

This is an Online: On-Demand class that will take place on our asynchronous online learning platform, Wet.Ink. Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink before 5pm on the first day of class! All video lectures for Online: On-Demand courses have closed captioning available.
