Craft Talk Series: ‘Empathy to Authenticity: Writing Historical Fiction and Other Identities’ with Autumn Allen

Event Description

When we write historical fiction and when we write characters whose identities we don't share, we stretch our understanding of the human condition. How can writers approach these projects with respect and patiently pursue authenticity and empathy? In this presentation, we will discuss the works of authors such as Toni Morrison, Jesmyn Ward, and Jacqueline Woodson, and we will explore the use of research, interviews, readers, and our own lived experience to get us closer to our characters so we can tell their stories with authenticity. Attendees will brainstorm the resources they have, the resources they need for their projects, and will come away with a better understanding of the human side of craft.

This program will take place in-person at our Center for Creative Writing in Boston's Seaport neighborhood.
