Writing About Sex- Remote!

Class Description

“Sex is a kind of crucible of humanness,” says the author Garth Greenwell, “and so the question isn’t so much why one would write about sex, as why one would write about anything else.” In this short fiction workshop, we’ll explore what effectively-written sex in literature can do: unearth unexpected traits of character, articulate spiritual and metaphysical concepts, engage with systems of power and oppression, arouse, disturb, and entertain. We’ll question the definition of a “good sex scene,” examine what unconscious biases could be blocking us from writing detailed, honest, sex, and consider our responsibilities as sex writers in the context of issues such as trauma and consent. To these ends, we’ll read examples of contemporary sex writing from writers such as Tamara Faith Berger, T Kira Madden, Vi Khi Nao, and Audre Lorde, generate creative and reflective writing in response to prompts, and submit one piece for feedback from the group. Whether we’re afraid to write about sex or we’ve been writing erotica for years, we’ll come away from this class empowered and inspired by exciting new approaches to take back to our work.
Please note: Class does not meet November 24th.

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
