Class Description

*Note: Parents/guardians must complete this permission form online if your teen is under 18.* Unlike previous forms, you only need to fill this out ONE TIME, not for every class. If you cannot remember whether you have already filled it out, please email [email protected] and we will check for you!

If you do not complete the form, registrations could be voided and the cancellation policy will apply. If the student is 18, simply let us know at [email protected]

Class Description:

What do the films Inception, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Brokeback Mountain, and The Shawshank Redemption all have in common? They were each based on novellas, a classic storytelling form that has gained popularity in recent years. Regardless of your genre, this is an opportunity to examine and discuss the essential features and craftsmanship of the novella form, drawing from examples including Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti, Jim Harrison’s Legends of the Fall and more. We’ll explore what makes the novella so unique and why its form makes it so adaptable for film and television. Each day of this workshop will be filled with writing and reading exercises designed to get you thinking and creating your own novella. How do you achieve the right condensed focus necessary for the novella form? What’s the appropriate length of a plot for the novella? Can you still create a complex world full of rich and compelling characters? This course is geared toward creative, energetic, and open-minded writers all of levels.

Takeaways:
By the end of the week, you'll have a clear understanding of what sets the novella apart from the short story and novel. You’ll also have clear strategies for outlining, developing and revising your own novella.

Scholarships:
Classes marked as “full” can still have scholarship spots available. So apply!
GrubStreet is happy to be able to offer some full scholarships for our teen writing camps. Please wait to hear from our Scholarship committee before registering for the class, as scholarships cannot be applied retroactively. Scholarships are distributed on a rolling basis, right up to 48 hours before class start. However, the sooner you apply, the better your chances of receiving a scholarship.

Who Should Register?
For writers ages 13 - 18 ONLY. Writing notebooks are available, but feel free to bring your own.

Remember, parents/guardians must also complete this permission form online before the start of the class. Otherwise, registrations could be voided and the cancellation policy will apply. If the student is 18, simply let us know at [email protected]

*If you are registering on behalf of your teen, add their email information in the “For a Friend or Child?” field on the right-hand side of the screen before you check out. This will send them a direct link and reminder to create their own profile with GrubStreet.
(After adding the class to your cart, click "Checkout" and click “Add” next to “For a Friend or Child?” on the right-hand side to fill in their email. This is an easy way of linking the class to your child and encourages them to create their own account.)

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button.
