Class Description
Workshop for Democracy
This is a Workshop for Democracy, designed by Steve Almond. In order to provide discounted tuition for this class, Steve will donate 100% of his teaching fee to the organization Black Votes Matter (blackvotesmatter.org), in hopes that registrants contribute the balance of their usual tuition to a cause of their choosing. The suggested donation is $50, though registrants are free to contribute more if they wish. Before class, Steve will *briefly* discuss this aspect of the course with participants, emphasizing ways citizens can be actively involved in this vital moment. No specific candidate or political party will be advocated for or endorsed as part of the Workshop for Democracy.
How to Write Riveting Scenes
The key to any unforgettable work of prose resides in the quality of its scenes. In this workshop, we’ll examine some of the best scenes ever written, and investigate what it takes to write a scene that deepens our sense of character and conflict, and escalates the action. Then we’ll work on an exercise to bring the lessons home.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
