Class Description
Do you know what happens at your story’s climactic moment? The climax is the beat of your story with the highest tension and drama. It is when the main conflict is resolved and when your protagonist reaches their goal -- or not. What your characters realize and decide in this moment will chart their course to directly to the climax.
Novel writers of any genre are invited to join me in this class to unlock your story’s climax and learn:
*The techniques for creating a dynamic climax that will stay with the reader
*How to ensure the payoff matches the build-up
*How to structure this scene no matter what genre you're writing
We'll debunk the myths about the climax and review examples from published works by Jess Walter, Andrew Sean Greer, and Jacqueline Woodson. Then we'll unpack recommendations to make sure the climax earns its place as the high point of your story.
Class Format
This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!
Scholarship Information
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
