Class Description

The midpoint is the focal point of your story and arguably the most important beat. It is often the moment that determines whether or not your characters reach their goal. What your characters realize and decide at this moment will chart their course directly to the climax. So in this narrative moment, don’t let your story sag in tension or conflict. In this seminar, novel writers of any genre are invited to learn the techniques for creating an engaging and compelling midpoint. Writers will walk away with a better understanding of how their midpoints relate to other beats of their story, and how their protagonist’s decisions and actions in this moment will lift the second half of the story.
Together, we'll debunk the myths about midpoints and review examples from published works by Violet Kupersmith, Tommy Orange, Kristin Hannah, Andrew Sean Greer, and Jacqueline Woodson. Then we'll unpack recommendations to make sure the midpoint earns its place as the centerpiece of your story.

Class Format

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
