Class Description
As writers of nonfiction and memoir begin to imagine publishing some of their work, they will begin to hear more about "building a platform." This term is something many want to run from–what does it have to do with the artistic process and why should it matter? There is of course no requirement that writers publish, but if they want to, it helps to have some literary credentials that help get their work noticed by agents and/or publishers.
There isn't one way to build a platform and it doesn't need to be tortuous. This class will provide information and fun with a myriad of suggestions and ideas, as well as a conversation about expectable disappointments along the way and how to keep moving forward to begin to develop a literary resume. We will cover strategies for getting your work out there, using Submittable, pitching essays, reading journals, finding writing communities, and tackle the question that plagues so many of us: to Tweet or not to Tweet? You'll leave this class feeling less overwhelmed and hopeful that this process can actually be fun.
Class Format
This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!
Scholarship Information
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
