Craft Talk Series: ‘I Can Tell This Was Written By A Man: Writing Beyond One's Gender’ with Peyton Thomas

Event Description

What makes a piece of writing "male" or "female?" In this session, we will practice writing beyond our gender, both for creative purposes and as a means of personal exploration. We'll discuss Isabel Fall's short story "I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter" and the pitfalls of presuming the gender identity of a given author. We'll also read work by authors like Patricia Highsmith, Carson McCullers, and Ernest Hemingway—all of whom may, according to scholars, be best understood as trans. Via writing prompts, participants will try out literary devices these authors use to portray gender fluidity. Attendees will come away with new insight into literary "crossing," and a wide variety of strategies with which to make the passage.

From how to write historical fiction and other identities with empathy and authenticity to how to write through dark periods (and take care of yourself while doing it), GrubStreet's Craft Talk Series explores fascinating writing subjects often left out of traditional classes and workshops. These interactive talks will include takeaway prompts to further guide your writing and thinking about series topics.

Tickets include one complimentary drink from the Fabulist Café. We encourage arriving before the session start time to collect your drink and settle in!
