Young Adult Writers Program (YAWP): Poetry

No Longer Enrolling

Class Description

This class is an opportunity to explore poetic forms, discover a new community of writers, and sharpen your descriptive abilities. We'll discuss canonical works, then move quickly toward the contemporary, with an emphasis on the performative. Poets studied may vary to include the likes of Sylvia Plath and T.S. Eliot, as well as EMINEM and Kendrick Lamar. Students will respond to a variety of prompts and in-class writing activities to bolster their poetic imagination and explore their linguistic reflexes. In addition to in-class writing, class time will be spent on short discussions of celebrated poets and performers, followed by a workshop of student work. Students will have the opportunity to workshop their work in peer groups, as well as receive feedback from the instructor.

Join GrubStreet’s Young Adult Writers Program (YAWP), a FREE creative writing workshop for Boston-area high schoolers. Our students come from a wide variety of high schools in the Boston area and enjoy cool writing exercises, mingling with fellow young writers, snacks, and an optional open mic. After four great years, YAWP has already been recognized by the Boston Globe as Boston's hub for writing teenagers. You must be 13-18 years to register.
