Class Description

You have stories that only you can tell.

You’ve experienced some things. You’ve suffered and you’ve overcome. You’ve failed and you’ve picked yourself up. You’ve lost, you’ve gained, and you want to share how you did it all and what you’ve learned along the way, about yourself and the world.

You’ve read personal essays and memoirs, and wonder how these writers were able to do that. How and where did they start writing about their lives?

How do you start writing about your life?

In this class, students will interrogate why they want to write about their lives, and what it is they want to write about. Participants will be led through various exercises to get them writing about their lives, and they will study writing craft techniques to develop their personal stories and characters. The class is an introductory class designed for people who are new or fairly new to writing about their lives.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
