Class Description

As conversations about environmental justice grow more urgent, writers have a unique opportunity to explore how their work engages with the natural world. In this workshop, we'll use generative exercises and group discussion to discover new ways of writing about nature, place, and the ecological imagination, drawing on a range of authors including Robin McLean, Ursula K. Le Guin, and others who challenge traditional notions of setting and landscape while weaving in layers of social commentary.

Each class begins with workshop: students may submit up to ten pages for their peers to read and discuss, with each writer workshopped at least once over the course of the session. Feedback will range across structure, character, voice, and worldbuilding. We'll then turn to a published story assigned for that week, using the text as a lens for exploring particular elements of craft, before closing with open writing time to put what we've discussed into practice.

Writers of all levels and genres are welcome.

Writing Roadmap: We've created a simple, goal-based writing roadmap to help you find the perfect GrubStreet course for your writing needs.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
