Class Description

In this workshop, we will write and revise stories with a focus on the story’s beating heart. Using either new or already-written stories, we will workshop with a focus on identifying: What is the emotional core of your story? How are your tone, voice, setting, plot, and/or characterization contributing to the emotional core? Where does the urgency of your story lie? Where does the heart of your story crack open, and how can we hone the story to better move your reader when it does?

We will look to both short stories and novel excerpts for examples of the urgent heart of story. Readings will include Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Cormac McCarthy, Gabriel García Márquez, Grace Paley, Kevin Wilson, Cynthia Ozick, and others.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
