Class Description
Got a finished manuscript? Ready to sign that killer book deal? First you need an agent. Agents are the gatekeepers to traditional publishers, and today, agents receive hundreds of inquiries a week. To stand out among this fierce competition, three things are vital: an enticing query, a concise synopsis, and a whopper of a first page. In this class, you will learn the structure and key elements of each of these three pieces of the query submission package. We'll dissect successful examples of all three and discuss how you can apply these techniques to your own queries, synopses, and first pages. You should come to class with a draft of a query, synopsis, and first page of your current work in progress. In class, you will rework these pieces using the guidelines and tips presented. The instructor will then give individualized feedback on all three elements of your query submission package. You will leave with the knowledge and tools to continue to revise and hone your query submission package in anticipation of beginning your agent search. At the end of class, the instructor will field questions on that process of searching for an agent as well as general publishing questions.
*Note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments will be given on a weekly basis. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
