Class Description

In addition to being a literary form, the personal essay has increasingly become a way into the news cycle, a platform for cultural criticism and commentary, and a route to getting published. Whether you’re an experienced memoirist placing excerpts of your manuscript or an aspiring essayist looking for an overview of the so-called “first-person industrial complex” of online writing, this class will provide a springboard to learn about the publishing landscape, practice pitching your work, and write timely personal essays. Part-strategy session, part-workshop, this class will involve discussion of pieces that exemplify the publishing opportunities proliferating online, as well as feedback on honing pitches and finding the perfect homes for your ideas. Readings will include work by Jia Tolentino, Lindy West, Roxane Gay, and Ayelet Waldman, among others.

Please note: No class on 11/12 (Veteran's Day Observed).
