Class Description

Anyone who has seen their work through to publication knows that writing is revision. That’s why we are dedicating this course to the act of slowing down. This is your chance to experiment, make mistakes, crack the shell of your writing open and find that seemingly elusive pearl.

In this class, you will be prompted to write two essays: one in the first half of the term, another in the second. You will also have the choice of bringing a draft of a work-in-progress. We will revise each piece for two weeks, and students will be asked to critique at least three of their peers. Throughout the course, you will be guided by readings on craft and essays that exemplify these craft lessons. We will be covering elements such as point of view, tense, style, and voice, and how you might explore them in your own work. Toward the end of the class we will focus on how to “cut the fat” and successfully edit your pieces. You will leave the course with two polished essays and the ability to find your inner editor in the future, when sitting alone with a first draft.

*Note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments and deadlines will be given by your instructor. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
