Class Description
One of the most important questions we can ask about our story is: who tells it? But the questions don't end there. We also have to consider how they tell it: first or third person? Present or past tense?
If you’ve found yourself confounded by questions of point of view, this class is for you! Over four weeks, we will explore the essentials of point of view, perspective, and narration, defining each of the elements and types at play, uncovering how they impact the story, and developing ways to use them to your story’s advantage.
Each week, we'll focus on a different point of view as a framework for how a story is told. We’ll discuss tools for using that POV to your advantage and look at published examples (authors will include Lois Lowry, Imbolo Mbue, Amor Towles, Tommy Orange, and Susan Choi, among others) to help you understand how it affects the story. And, of course, you’ll put the tools you learn into practice in your own writing, through weekly exercises and writing prompts. You’ll also have the opportunity to receive feedback on a draft of a story or scene, through the framework of point of view.
You’ll come away from class with a better understanding of these story elements, and a road map for how to use them to develop your draft.
*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
Scholarship Information

In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
