Class Description
First drafts of novels can be messy, amorphous, and daunting. Sometimes, extensive critical feedback can be counterproductive before the first draft is finished, yet writers often find themselves losing focus without support and guidance. In this class, we will do exercises, discuss craft issues—characterization, the protagonist's desire, structure and plot, point of view, voice, dialogue—and read short scenes from each other's work, providing on-the-spot feedback in an environment that recognizes the specific challenges of the novel in progress.
During the second half of the course, all writers will have the opportunity to submit one novel excerpt (15 pages, max) to receive a written critique from the instructor. Novels of all genres are welcome. It is recommended that you have written at least 10 pages of your first draft before signing up (if you've written more – great!). Please bring a one-page novel synopsis (single-spaced, 12-point font) to the first class.

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

This class will take place in-person at our Center for Creative Writing in Boston's Seaport neighborhood.
