Class Description
Do you struggle with voice or are you stuck in your writing process? Mary Karr wrote that the aspect of memoir that counts the most is voice. This powerful component, both concrete and mysterious, can be hard to define and yet we all know a great one when we read it.
In this four-week class, we’ll explore how to work with our true voice, develop courage, and write with power and clarity.
We’ll consider a range of memoirists, including Jesmyn Ward, Carmen Maria Machado, Jill Bolte Taylor, Geoff Dyer, Joan Didion, Vivek Shraya, and Patti Smith, to uncover some secrets, and each week, through readings and writing assignments, both in and out of class, we’ll drill down to what’s essential.
Please expect to devote 5-6 hours per week for at-home assignments. This workshop is open to all levels.
This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! Scholarship Information
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
