Class Description

This class is for novelists who have taken workshops before, and who have already made some progress on a first draft. The goals of this workshop are to write or revise at least 100 pages in 10 weeks, as well as to identify and correct shortcomings in craft areas such as characterization, point of view, structure, plot and scenes. You will be asked to submit and read the first page and a one-page outline of each of your fellow writers’ novels before class begins; after that your time outside of class will be for your own work.

Feedback in this class will be delivered using the novel in progress method: reading 1 - 2 scenes (up to 8 pages) aloud in class each week and receiving on-the-spot feedback from your fellow novelists and instructor. Each student will have a 15-minute individual conference with the instructor in one "studio" class, about halfway through the course. At the end of class you will be invited to electronically submit 30 pages of your work to the instructor, and will receive feedback via e-mail. Class size limited to 9 students.

Applications for this class have closed. You will hear from the reading committee within a week.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
