Class Description

If you’re ready to reconnect with your writing practice—or establish one for the first time—this class is for you, your obsessions, and your confusions. Whether you’ve never written creatively before or you’re a more experienced writer looking for a recharge, in this course you will have one goal: to develop a regular creative writing practice. Creative writing classes often focus on supporting and engaging writers by examining both each other’s writing and published work, but in this course, we will focus on the process of writing itself. By using prompts centered on memory, experimentation, and motion, we will build a yawning, generous space in which to elicit and explore. Each week’s lesson will include a series of writing prompts, exercises, and reading, including authors whose work sometimes explores the process of writing like Sadiya Hartman, Joan Naviyuk Kane, Robin Coste Lewis, Sawako Nakayasu, Jamila Osman, and Charles Yu.

Throughout the week, we will reflect on and discuss our own writing processes and what is and isn’t working as we build out our own individual writing practices. At the end of each week, we will submit a new piece of writing, and twice over the course of the class you will receive generative (not critical) feedback on a piece of writing from your fellow writers. We will end the course with new material to work with, the impulse and skills to continue developing it, and a renewed writing practice to keep you going.

This class is for anyone looking to write more: whether you're feeling stuck in the middle of a project and need a little energy to move through it, or you haven't even decided what genre you want to write in and just want to discover how you respond to new stimuli, together we will write and write and read and write!

*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
