Class Description
You’ve started out on a first novel draft. Maybe you just have an idea, maybe you’ve written a few chapters, or maybe you've written a lot, or maybe you've got some rough notes and outlines--but have no idea how it all holds together or where to go next. How do you build your characters and approach your various settings? What is point of view, anyway, and how do you know when you’re doing it right? What the heck is voice, and how can you find and sharpen it? No matter where you are in the drafting process, this class can help! Each week we will focus on one area of novel-specific craft –– such as exposition, scene building, plot, character, arc, and more––and generate new material each week through a series of prompts and exercises. We will also offer each other basic feedback and support on each other's writing and writing processes. We'll check in each week about our struggles and victories, and discuss strategies to keep ourselves motivated, both during class and after. You will come out of this course with a slew of new scenes, ideas, and the inspiration, craft skills, and confidence to complete your draft.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
