Class Description

A six-week course for beginning/intermediate writers looking for a grounding in the fundamentals of novel writing, including character, plot, structure, point of view, setting, dialogue, and detail. We’ll work through weekly writing prompts focused on developing your understanding and mastery of these foundational elements. We'll also read a contemporary novel together that, each week we'll discuss and analyze through the lens of the craft issue at hand. At the beginning of the course, you'll set a personal writing goal and regularly share your progress with your fellow writers, as we keep each other accountable and on track, and troubleshoot any craft issues you encounter along the way. You'll have the opportunity to workshop and receive feedback on a section from the opening of your novel. At the end of class, you'll leave with a firmer grasp of a novel's core components, a deeper understanding of how to read a novel like a writer, the beginnings of an outline or synopsis, and you'll be several new scenes closer to completing your novel draft.

*Note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments will be given on a weekly basis and students will be able to access the portal at anytime after 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
