Class Description

In this six-week online course we will explore the dynamics of both storytelling and screenwriting. You will learn the conventions of screenwriting -- formatting, structure, dialogue, and conflict -- as well as how to craft a compelling narrative. We’ll support and reinforce those crucial screenwriting concepts with weekly exercises, and you’ll put these skills to use by kicking off a draft of your own original feature film or television series. We will discuss each other's scripts, and you’ll also receive instructor insight and feedback on story construction and the screenplay format. Expect to be put to work and learn a ton!

This class is classified as a survey, which means the focus is on introducing students to new topics and forms of writing. Though student work will be discussed, the emphasis is not on formal critique, but on learning, class discussion, and writing exercises. At the end of the class, students will have the opportunity to submit one revised piece to the instructor for feedback, and recommendations on next steps. Please expect to devote 4-5 hours/week to this class.

*Note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments will be given on a weekly basis and students will be able to access the portal at anytime after 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
