Class Description
Using one of the three poems provided as source material, students will write an essay or a piece of short fiction that tells a story related to themes implied from the spaces in-between the lines of the poem. Students will then discuss what about the poem's lines inspired their story. Sample poems include those from Poet Laureates Natasha Trethewey, Ada Limon, Billy Collins as well as popular poems from William Carlos Williams, Mary Oliver, Cathy Smith Bowers and Kevin Young.
