Class Description

How do some authors make characters—their relationships and their worlds—seem so vivid and poignant? How do they move us? Fiction II is designed to give intermediate writers, more experienced writers, and those familiar with writing workshops the intensive review and analysis they need to make their stories deeper and sharper. We’ll focus primarily on workshopping student writing and discussing literary models, including work by Ha Jin, Aleksandar Hemon, and Alice Munro, among others. You will write two short stories, up to 25 pages each, and receive in-depth critique from your peers and from the instructor. You’ll also provide rich critique of your colleagues’ work, an exercise that can sharpen your instincts as a writer. Workshopping novel chapters is discouraged as we’ll be focused on refining our ability to craft complete narratives.
