Class Description
How do some authors make characters—their relationships and their worlds—seem so vivid and poignant? How do they move us? Fiction II is designed to give intermediate writers, more experienced writers, and those familiar with writing workshops the intensive review and analysis they need to make their stories deeper and sharper. We’ll focus primarily on workshopping student writing and discussing literary models, including work by Roberto Bolaño, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Edwidge Danticat, among others. You will write two short stories, up to 25 pages each, and receive in-depth critique from your peers and from the instructor. You’ll also provide rich critique of your colleagues’ work, an exercise that can sharpen your instincts as a writer. Workshopping novel chapters is discouraged as we’ll be focused on refining our ability to craft complete narratives.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
