Crónicas y Cuentos: A bilingual creative writing workshop
Some of us—we with the busy imaginations, we who have lived through what seemed insurmountable—can’t shake the feeling we should be writing things down. Let’s make stories together. For six weeks we’ll read and write creatively in a bilingual space that welcomes all writers: in English for those who prefer it, español para los que lo prefieren, and Spanglish para todos in between. We’ll read and discuss fiction, essays, and memoir with an emphasis on Latin American and Latino writers. Weekly writing exercises, language games, and paired discussions will offer us richer ways to use language and storytelling. Finally, we’ll share our fiction and narrative nonfiction with each other to get feedback. The workshop is open to writers with any level of experience (including none at all!).
IMPORTANT: FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW TO REGISTER
GrubStreet is happy to offer this free workshop in partnership with the Boston Public Library. Because space is limited, it is important that students interested in registering for this course follow these directions before April 20:
1. Click the "SEE DIRECTIONS TO APPLY" link in the top right corner of this page. Once you are taken to the short application form, simply enter your name in the field that reads "Please describe your workshop experience.” You do not need to upload a writing sample or describe your workshop experience. Click "Apply." Our system will send you an email thanking you for starting the application process. Now move on to step 2.
2. From the course description page (this page), click the "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" link above the "SEE DIRECTIONS TO APPLY" link. Complete the scholarship application, but once again, you do not need to upload a writing sample. In the "Personal statement" field, please tell us why you are interested in taking this class. Once you have completed the scholarship application, click the "Apply" button down at the bottom. You will receive an email confirming we have received your application.
3. Once we have reviewed your application, we will confirm your participation in the course with one more email. This email will include a link and instructions for finalizing your registration in the class.
Crónicas y cuentos: un taller bilingüe de escritura creativa
Algunos de nosotros—los que tenemos imaginaciones hiperactivas, los que hemos sobrevivido lo que antes nos parecía imposible—no podemos evitar la sensación de que debiéramos escribirlo todo. Escribamos juntos nuestras historias. Examinaremos la obra de Roberto Bolaño, Toni Morrison, Sandra Cisneros, Frank Báez, Lorrie Moore, Tim O’Brien y otros para aprender el arte de la escritura. Aquí debe llenar la solicitud de becas. De nuevo, no hay que subir una muestra de sus escritos. En el campo “Personal statement” (Declaración personal), por favor, explique por qué está interesado en tomar esta clase. Una vez que haya llenado esta solicitud, haga clic en el botón “Apply” abajo.
Le llegará un email confirmando que hemos recibido su aplicación.
3. Una vez que hayamos repasado su aplicación, confirmaremos su participación en el curso con otro email. Este email incluirá un enlace con instrucciones para finalizar su matriculación en la clase.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
