Class Description

In this week-long intensive for both beginning and intermediate writers of all genres for young readers, we will explore what it means to write for children. How can we write stories that young people can relate to when our own childhoods may be far behind us? How can we create honest and exciting characters for kids to connect with? How do our words speak to them?

With a close look at several children’s books, discussion of technique, and opportunities to apply writing strategies through prompts and exercises, you will have a chance to dig into the craft of children’s writing. Workshops and informal sharing will provide opportunities to receive supportive and constructive feedback on a work-in-progress or a piece from class. You will leave with ideas, beginnings, a draft, or new developments on a previous piece as well as tools to continue to fuel your growth as a children’s writer.
