Class Description

Whether you want to expand your knowledge, experiment with new forms, or just produce fresh work, this fun, intensive class will give you the opportunity, over six weeks, to begin six new short stories and/or write new material as a basis for longer work. Whether you want to expand your knowledge, experiment with new forms, or just produce fresh work, this fun, intensive class will give you the opportunity, over six weeks, to begin six new short stories and/or write new material as a basis for longer work.

Each week, through a series of directed, in-class writing exercises, you will explore plot, form, character, theme, setting, and language. Students will share work with one another for in-class workshop sessions. Classes will also include craft discussions and reading of contemporary, published stories that will serve as models for analysis. Authors and readings might include authors such as Gabriel García Márquez’s Innocent Erendira and Other Stories, Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body and Other Parties, Kelly Link’s Get In Trouble, ZZ Packer’s Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, George Saunders’ Tenth of December, Lesley Nneka Arimah’s What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky, and Jhumpa Lahiri’s Unaccustomed Earth and more.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
