Class Description
This is a course that will look to some of the contemporary masters of the short story to inspire new work--not to write "after" pieces, but to explore what they've made possible. These will inspire prompts that will give you the opportunity, over six weeks, to write six new short stories (300 to 1000 words) and/or to produce new material as a basis for longer work. Students will bring copies of their completed stories to class each week where they will receive feedback in brief workshop sessions. Each week, we will also look at an element of craft--plot, form, character, theme, setting, etc.--and perform thoughtful critical analysis on the published texts. Authors we’ll consider include (but are not limited to) Carmen Maria Machado, Daisy Johnson, Samantha Hunt, Julio Cortazar, Percival Everett, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Rajesh Parameswaran.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
