Class Description

John Locke once said that “new opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed…” In this class, we will learn how to make new opinions stick, no matter how controversial or contrary to popular belief. In six weeks, each student will write 6 op-eds, ranging between 700-900 words. Spring-boarding off the news and current events, we will tackle contemporary issues and learn to make our commentary powerfully succinct. We’ll work on clarity, point of view, research, structure, and voice -- all the while culling op-eds from publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Salon, The Guardian, and other sources of equal caliber to study as examples. Each student will have the opportunity to be workshopped and participate in weekly critiques. Toward the end of the course, we will dedicate some time to understanding the process of Op-Ed submissions. You’ve got a thing, or two, or six to say? Whether you're just starting out, or perfecting your craft, here’s your chance.

*Note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments and deadlines will be given by your instructor. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
