Class Description

Sometimes the smallest moment (or the shortest essay) holds the greatest revelation. But when it comes to writing our own lives, it can be difficult to know where to begin. If you’re suffering from writer’s block, or, on the contrary, have so many ideas you don’t know how to commit to just one, this is the course for you. In this course, you will have one goal: to write six short personal essays. Each week, we’ll explore a different essay form or theme to inspire our work, reading published examples and studying the craft behind them. We’ll put the tools we learn into practice through a series of exercises and writing prompts. At the end of each week, you’ll submit a new essay draft of up to 1,500 words for impressions and feedback from your fellow writers, to help you identify and develop the “heat” of your essays. You will come out of the course with six new drafts and the insight and inspiration to develop them into polished essays.

*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
