Class Description
In Six Weeks, Six Comics, we’ll explore turning your experiences and musings into graphic narratives. Each week, we’ll write and draw a different kind of comic that will be able to stand on its own, or become the beginning of a graphic novel, a collection of comics, or graphic narrative for a literary journal. We’ll create—or get a start on—a comic strip, a graphic novel, an autobiographical comic, a graphic essay, and a comics poetry piece. At the end of each class, we’ll workshop our new pieces for graphic narrative clarity and focus.
By the end of the course, we will have practiced cartoon drawing, drawing likenesses/caricatures, creating a thumbnail—or rough draft of your comic—using reference photos, and inking your work with pens or with brush and India ink. You’ll also have six new drafts of comics! For inspiration, we’ll study the narrative and cartooning styles of diverse cartoonists, including Charles Schulz, The Hernandez Brothers, John Porcellino, Vera Brosgol, Posy Simmonds and Ebony Flowers. This class is for beginning to advanced writers or artists—anyone who seeks new ways to tell stories. No prior art experience is needed.
Driving to the center? For evening or weekend classes, we recommend SP+ Parking at 45 Binford Street for the most affordable parking around. It's about a 10-minute walk to GrubStreet and offers a flat rate of:
- $13 after 4pm Monday-Friday
- $9 all day Saturday-Sunday

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

This class will take place in-person at our Center for Creative Writing in Boston's Seaport neighborhood.
