Writing with the Self as Witness

Class Description

Writing with a witness consciousness creates more cognitive space, alchemizes our experiences, and hones observational skills that allow us to access the emotion needed to give our writing both its grace and its grit. In this multi-genre workshop, we will weave our individual life experiences into engaging and evocative writing. Through discussion, in class reading, and generative writing exercises, we will explore ways of giving voice to the inner “seer”—"Self as Witness”— in order to recount and reconcile the sacred, mundane, and even profane in our own personal lives and the larger collective with more self-compassion and empathy. With specific focus on the craft elements of perspective, associative leaping, imagery, and sensory detail, you will develop tools that will serve your current writing projects, inspire ways of approaching new ones, and enhance your sense of connection to the larger collective.
