Class Description

Have you ever wanted to write an op-ed piece but weren't sure how to organize your ideas? This three-hour seminar will teach you how to channel your opinions into purposeful and punchy pieces. We will talk about taking a stance, establishing a good hook, and recognizing both sides of an argument. Using successful op-ed pieces as our base, we will examine what works and what doesn't, and why. Students should bring an example of a favorite op-ed piece, and also a list of grievances or pet peeves. In-class writing and discussion will help students see how their grievances can be turned into effective and persuasive columns. Students will leave the class with writing that can be revised into an op-ed, and ideas about where to send the final piece.
