Writing the Action Scene

Class Description

Action scenes add excitement and power to a story, but how do you convey the energy of an action scene using the written word?
In this six-hour workshop, students will read and watch several great action scenes from various works of fiction. We will study the masters of genre literature such as Philip Pullman, Stephen King, Frank Herbert, JK Rowling, Suzanne Collins, and Steig Larsson. Writers will learn how to build suspense, use parallel action, plot out a large-scale battle scene, and craft sentences that move. In the second half of the day, writers will work on an action scene of their own and then share it with the class to receive peer and instructor feedback.

This workshop is perfect for screenwriters, novelists, and short story writers working in any genre where action scenes are a part of the story.

Part of GrubStreet's Elements of Craft series, dedicated to exploring craft issues on a deeper level. For more on this series' offerings, click here.
