Writing and Selling The Topical “Think Piece"

Class Description

In this seminar, we’ll look beyond the news-driven, issue-based op-ed that populates much of what’s called opinion writing, and learn how to write the more nuanced “think piece.” These are short essays that respond to a timely cultural event by posing a question, and ruminating, reflecting, and speculating on its wider implications. We’ll examine how think pieces allow you to use the personal “I,” tell stories, and include broader reflections. We’ll explore what makes for interesting, thought-provoking ideas and angles, and how to make connections between unexpected topics and subjects. We’ll also look at exemplary think pieces in local publications such as WBUR’s Cognoscenti and the Boston Globe Magazine, and national outlets like Salon, Slate, New York Times, Morning News, and others, and how to sell your finished think pieces to these publications. Come with ideas. You’ll leave the class with a draft of at least one “riff” and notes for others.
