Class Description
This class will study how women of color -- light & dark, cis & trans, empowered & disenfranchised -- are taking a stand against patriarchy through words. Whether it is through the poetry of Rupi Kaur, the speeches of Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, the past testimony of women like Professor Anita Hill, or current survivors leading the #MeToo Movement on Oscar stages or through Instagram post, undeniably women are finding their voices and being moved to speak, tweet and take a stand using words.
This workshop will be a space for those who identify as women to breakdown what it means to be a woman armed with words? What does it mean to be a woman of color, whose words historically are not honored but always spoken? We will look at feminism through the writing of Ida B.Wells, Audre Lorde, Beyonce and Jessica Care Moore. We will discuss places where race, writing and social inequities have divided women in the past, but most importantly participants will write, share and listen to each other’s truth as a means to unite all women through poetry, testimony and storytelling.
Families welcome. Coffee and snacks provided. Teens are welcome to attend with an older relative. We will provide simple activities to keep young children occupied.
