Class Description

The antagonists of your story must fulfill their obstructionist role but also be human. He or she must be richly drawn with a unique voice and motives and desires deep enough to propel a narrative forward in a negative way, while being understood and plausibly complicit. In this intensive session designed to break through stubborn preconceptions you might have about villains and other opponents, you'll explore what you know and what you don't yet know about your antagonist and your other opponents. Through select readings and exercises, you'll dig to the heart of your characters' wants and needs with a fresh perspective.

Part of a series on character psychology and motivation taught by Lynne Griffin. Take every class in the series or simply choose the craft topics that are relevant to the challenges you face in your work. Classes include:

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
