Class Description

Now that everyone can shoot and edit a beautiful short film on their phone, how do you get your short film to stand out? Answer: with a great short screenplay.

This one-day workshop will walk students through the process of writing and producing a compelling, tight, original short film: from idea to outline to script to screen.

The course will be divided into three parts. The first part will be dedicated to studying the short film form. We will watch film clips, read scripts, and examine the structures, themes, characters, and dialogue of successful short films, including "The Lunch Date" (Adam Davidson), "Sequin Raze" (Sarah Gertrude Shapiro), "Yearbook " (Bernardo Britto), and "La Noche Bunea" (Alex Mallis). In the second part, students will do a series of exercises designed to get everyone comfortable with short film structure, creating a compelling logline, developing characters, and writing authentic dialogue, and then we'll workshop those exercises. We will conclude with a discussion of the practical aspects of getting a short film made and exhibited in Boston and beyond.

This course is designed for writers of all levels. Students are strongly encouraged to come to class with an idea or concept for a short film. It is not required, but students may also bring short (1- to 3-page) excerpts from scripts they want to workshop.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
