The Novel Series: Bringing Flat Characters to Life

Class Description

Do you have a character in your novel who is important to the plot but limp and lifeless on the page? In this seminar, we will work to build that character into a round, three-dimensional person from the ground up. We’ll start with exercises that fill in biographical details for your character; then, we'll examine published works, introducing techniques such as counterpointed characterization. From there, we'll create scenes in class designed to help you activate your character. Please come to class with a specific character in mind and a description (up to one page) outlining as much as you know about the character and their role in the novel. We'll use this as a starting point in transforming your character from flat to round.
