The Memoir Series: Writing the Threshold Moments

Class Description

One way to look at a journey is by the thresholds we’ve crossed. Whether in miles or in mind, our lives are a series of thresholds, large and small, that in some way change us and/or our paths. In our memoirs, these are the moments that propel our stories forward—whether it’s your first kiss (or your last kiss) with someone, the evening you got lost in the woods, the moment your first child was born, the moment you decided that chocolate could possibly save your soul, or, in the words of Mary Oliver, that day “you knew what you had to do,” these turns in the road are rife with possibility for creating suspense, advancing plot, developing character, and creating bridges that connect to other important scenes in your memoir. In this class, we’ll look at a selection of memoir excerpts to discuss the powers of the liminal space, and we’ll use a series of writing prompts to mine the memory for those life-changing, page-turning moments.
