The Ghost of You: Writing About Traumatic Loss

Class Description

Losing someone abruptly and traumatically due to events like homicide, suicide, addiction (and others), comes with feelings that range from guilt, confusion due to unanswered questions, and of course, pain. Writing about that loss is hard, and as difficult as it is, there is way you can turn that pain into something: a story for others to read, understand, and maybe even to take action. In this 3-hour seminar, we will talk about the ways you can turn your grief into stories, memoirs, poems, or even op-ed articles. We will read short excerpts from published writers like Patrick Michael MacDonald, Jesmyn Ward, David Tomas Martinez, to see what route they chose. After writing, we will workshop for feedback in the company of others that have similar pains, and you will leave the day with a better idea of what story you want to tell, whose story, and writing to work on further. You may come to class with a piece they already started, or with the goal of creating something new.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
