The Art of Multiperspectivity

Class Description

Multiperspectivity: n. a narrative technique by which the writer shows more than one perspective/narrator to the reader in order to complicate, enhance, expand, cross-check, distort, and/or clarify the story.

In this class, we’ll tackle the art of integrating and intertwining multiple perspectives in our stories! We’ll read and discuss pieces that demonstrate multiperspectivity, including Joey Franklin’s “Grand Theft Auto." We’ll specifically analyze what multiple perspectives do for a story (and why we can’t achieve the same effect with only one perspective), and how to craft and knit perspectives together.

Bring your half-baked story idea; your flimsy first draft; the chapter of your memoir that you just can’t get right—and a willingness to turn it on its head.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
