Class Description

In this seminar, we will explore structure and plot in both the novel and the short story. We will examine the spectrum of structural choices, from the conventional to the experimental, made by authors ranging from Richard Yates to John Edgar Wideman, Virginia Woolf to Junot Diaz. The seminar will also include numerous craft exercises designed to help all of us apply these techniques to our ownfiction and to expand our palettes as writers. By the end of the class, we will have an enhanced appreciation for the architecture beneath the surface of any successful narrative, as well as a new set of skills to apply to our own work. The class is designed to be of use for writers of all levels, from emerging authors just beginning to discover their own voices to experienced novelists seeking to reexamine a manuscript though a new lens.
