Class Description
In a time of great polarization in America, social justice commentary is one of the most powerful tools that a writer has to make a difference. But how do you write a commentary that is nuanced, powerful, provocative and not just a rant? In this class, you'll read examples of successful commentaries, get tips on writing your own, brainstorm ideas off of the latest current events and get a piece with a social justice angle started.
Students also will get tips on pitching from the instructor, whose op-eds have been published in the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, USA Today and other publications. She's also a mentor-editor with The Op-Ed Project.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
